What's a CPLD?

Programmable Logic Device (PLD) is a generic term given to a wide variety of products. Originally called Programmable Array Logic (PAL) or Gate Array Logic (GAL) this class of devices lets you program and re-program different logic functions in a single chip. By building up functions from generic logic gates (AND, OR, NOR, XOR, NOT, etc) complex systems can be designed. Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) is the industry term for a device with multiple programmable logic devices in a single chip.
